Overview Governor Mark R. Warner established the Private Crime Prevention Practitioner (PCPP) certification program in October 2003. The PCPP program trains and certify professionals in the private security industry in the area of crime prevention and homeland security. The PCPP program is modeled after the successful Crime Prevention Specialist program for law enforcement officers. The Department of Criminal Justice Services administers and operates the program. Certification will be awarded based on successful completion of 24 hours of basic crime prevention training, 16 hours of specialized training and 8 hours of instructor certification training (if not already instructor certified). The process also requires a national fingerprint-based criminal history records check; and at least one year of experience in the private security field. Individuals interested in the Private Crime Prevention Practitioner Certification can complete the training requirement for 24 hours of Basic Crime Prevention training by attending the first 3 days - 24 hours of the Basic Crime Prevention course offered by the VCPA. This is the course that the VCPA has been offering to law enforcement and other crime prevention practitioners for over 10 years. The VCPA crime prevention trainers are current or former law enforcement officers and crime prevention specialists who have an average of twenty years experience in developing and delivering crime prevention services.
